Legislature Overrides Veto of SB 2077

July 20, 2016

It’s been a tough fight, but today the State Senate and House voted to override Gov. David Ige’s veto of Senate Bill 2077.

This is a huge victory for HGEA members and workers in the Maui Region hospital system undergoing privatization.

In 2015, lawmakers and Gov. David Ige chose the path of privatization for the Maui region hospitals – which we strongly opposed. Having done so, it was their responsibility to provide relief for workers losing their state positions.

Legislators had already acknowledged that workers deserved help when they unanimously passed Senate Bill 2077, 76-0, during the 2016 session.

We were appalled that the governor refused to consider fair compensation and early retirement options and vetoed SB 2077.

Today, we would like to thank lawmakers in both the Senate and House for courageously taking a stand to help the workers of the Maui Region hospital system.
