Legislative update: February 13, 2020

February 13, 2020

We’re just about one third of the way through this year’s Legislative Session and we’re still going strong! As we mentioned last week, Friday is First Lateral, where all bills in the originating house with more than one referral must be in their final committee (for example, a house bill with a House Labor, Finance referral, must have passed out of the Labor Committee to be considered “alive” this Session). If a bill with more than one referral is not in its final committee, it is technically considered “dead” for the remainder of Session.

We Opposed the Administration’s Takeaway to Your Pension

This session, the administration introduced legislation to eliminate the inclusion of shortage differential when calculating your ERS pension. This action would have retroactively impacted many members’ final retirement calculations. When H.B. 2311 and S.B. 2867 were called into hearing by both the House and Senate Labor Committees, we took action and testified in strong opposition to this change. House Labor Chair Aaron Johanson and Senate Labor Chair Brian Taniguchi agreed with our position and removed the takeaway language from both versions of the legislation.

We will continue to fight for your rights and benefits at the Capitol!

All bills that impact our membership have been flagged on our website. This list of bills is updated in real time, so you’ll always have the most up-to-the-moment information on all bills that we are tracking. Click here to view 2020 Legislative Priorities and Priority Bills.
