Trump’s attempt to end collective bargaining rights is a blatant abuse of power.

A union-busting executive order signed by President Donald Trump threatens to strip millions of federal workers of their right to organize. It’s a blatant abuse of power by the billionaires and anti-worker extremists running this administration that could have impacts beyond the federal level. This week, Hawaii State AFL-CIO President Randy Perreira, who serves as HGEA’s executive director, said we’re fighting back.
“This has nothing to do with making government more effective,” he said in a statement released by the state federation. “It is a calculated move to take away the voice of the very people who deliver essential public services.”
Thousands of federal employees across the state carry out responsibilities that touch nearly every part of daily life. They provide health care to veterans. They ensure the safe and orderly operation of air travel. They enforce environmental laws that protect our coastline and native species. They help prepare for hurricanes, floods, and other disasters.
“These public servants bring experience, professionalism, and a deep sense of duty to their work,” Perreira said. “They deserve the freedom to raise concerns, improve safety, and speak up without fear of retaliation.”
AFSCME President Lee Saunders echoed Perreira’s sentiments. “Federal workers – including thousands of AFSCME members – are the lifeblood of their communities. … This attack is meant to silence their voices, so Elon Musk and his minions can shred the services that working people depend on the federal government to do.”
President Trump’s executive order to end collective bargaining is patently unlawful, and if it stands would mark a major turning point in the labor movement writ large.
“If a president can wipe away those rights with a single signature, every worker in this country should be alarmed,” Perreira said. “This executive order is not just an attack on federal employees. It is a warning to every union member, every family that depends on public services, and every person who believes in fairness and accountability.”
The Hawaii State AFL-CIO said it firmly stands with federal employees. “We will fight this abuse of power through organizing, advocacy, and solidarity with working people across the country,” Perreira said. “The right to organize and speak up is not up for negotiation. We will protect it.”
